5 Signs Your Business Website Is Costing You Customers (And How to Fix Each One)

Most business owners know when their website is bad. What they underestimate is how much a bad website costs them — not in a vague, theoretical sense, but in concrete lost revenue, every single day it stays online unchanged.

We have audited hundreds of business websites across India over the past several years, and the same problems appear with remarkable consistency. Here are the five most damaging — along with what to actually do about each one.

Sign 1: Your Website Takes More Than 3 Seconds to Load

According to Google research, 53% of mobile users abandon a website that takes longer than 3 seconds to load. In India, where many users are on mobile data connections, that threshold is felt acutely.

A slow website does not just frustrate visitors — it signals incompetence. If a potential customer arrives on a website representing a company that cannot load a webpage efficiently, what does that say about how efficiently the company will serve them?

Fix it: Start with PageSpeed Insights. If your score is below 70, the most common culprits are unoptimised images (convert to WebP, compress below 200KB), excessive plugins, and no browser caching. Most speed issues can be resolved without rebuilding the entire site.

Sign 2: Your Contact Information Is Hard to Find

This sounds trivially obvious. Yet we consistently find business websites where the phone number is buried in the footer, the contact page requires three clicks to reach, and there is no WhatsApp link despite the business responding to WhatsApp throughout the day.

Every friction point between a potential customer's desire to contact you and the act of contacting you costs you a percentage of that traffic.

Fix it: Phone number and WhatsApp link in the header, visible on every page. A contact form accessible from the main navigation. On mobile, the phone number should be clickable to dial directly. These are twenty-minute fixes.

Sign 3: Your Website Has Not Been Updated Since 2021

Old websites are not just aesthetically dated — they are technically vulnerable. WordPress installations that have not been updated have known security holes. Plugins stop receiving support. SSL certificates expire without notice. And the content on the site — pricing, team members, services — may no longer reflect your actual business.

A potential customer Googling you will compare your website against your competitor's. If yours looks three years old and theirs looks three weeks old, you are starting from a disadvantage in every comparison.

Fix it: Schedule a quarterly content review. Keep the CMS and all plugins updated. Even if you cannot rebuild the whole site, adding a recent blog post, updating the team page, and refreshing your portfolio signals an active business.

Sign 4: There Is No Clear Call to Action

We regularly see business websites with excellent information about services, compelling testimonials, beautiful case studies — and no clear instruction about what to do next. The user reads everything, feels vaguely positive, and then navigates away without taking any action because nothing prompted them to.

Every page on your website should answer the question: "What do I want the visitor to do next?" If the answer is "call us" — there should be a prominent, clear "Call Us" button. If it is "request a quote" — that button should be impossible to miss.

Fix it: Define one primary conversion action per page. Add a clear, high-contrast call-to-action button above the fold. Test button copy — "Get a Free Quote" typically outperforms "Contact Us" by 2–3x.

Sign 5: Your Website Does Not Show Up When People Search for You

Go to Google and search for your own business. Then search for the service you provide, in the city you operate in. If you are not appearing in either, you essentially do not exist online for the people who are actively looking for what you do.

This is not bad luck — it is a solvable technical problem. No sitemap submitted to Google, no proper meta titles, pages with thin content, no local business schema, a domain that has never earned a single backlink — each of these is a fixable issue.

Fix it: Submit your sitemap to Google Search Console. Set up and verify your Google Business Profile. Write a genuine, 800+ word page for each core service. Build local backlinks by getting listed in directories like Justdial, Sulekha, and IndiaMart.

A Website Is Either Working For You or Against You

There is no neutral. A website that exists but does not convert, does not rank, and does not build trust is actively telling potential customers something negative about your business every time they visit.

If any of the five signs above resonated, let us do a free website audit for your business. We will show you exactly what is holding your site back and what it would take to fix it.
